This weekend saw the return of the SNO!down to Castleford, now in its third year, the event has become a staple on the indoor competition scene. Aimed towards the younger kids the course was built for varying abilities and there were a number of different age categories. As well as being fully booked and getting more riders than ever before there was also more support behind the scenes with all the winners taking home cold hard cash for their efforts.

The entire event is run as a jam giving young kids and seasoned pros, skiers and snowboarders the chance to all ride together. Things kicked off straight away with tricks being thrown down almost before the judges had the chance to take their seats.

In the girls category, despite there only being a few entries it was still super close but it the end it was experience that took it with the uni students talking first and second.

The kids category was by far one of the most stacked in the contest with kids from all across the country showing up to show that there is more than just a few rippers coming through in the next few years. In the end it was the locals that showed how its done with Hadyn Fiori taking home the cash.

The youth category was without a doubt the closest of them all seeming as though any of the riders could end up on top. Local tyler Harding was just about pipped to the post by southern rail slayer Mike Rowlands.

In the mens category there was only ever going to be one winner. Coming straight back from his season in the States he was throwing tricks that no one else would even think about, earning himself the title of overall champion for the third year in a row was Chris Wadsworth.

Huge thanks to Kerry Daines once again for putting on another awesome event and to Dave Miller for putting in all the support behind the scenes. We hope you all enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you all again next year.

I first met George in Saas Fee about five years ago and while he has flown beneath the radar for most people I have been keeping a close eye on him. After moving out to Morzine a couple of years ago to concentrate on getting his instructor qualifications he has developed a truly unique style and one of the countries most well rounded skiers. We have been working with him for a couple of years now and after his breakout trip to Poland earlier this year we decided that it was high time to catch up with him to find out what it is that makes him tick.

So your packing your stuff to come back to the UK. How has your winter been?
My winter has been awesome, mades lots of progression with my tricks, style and the media side of skiing. Don’t want the season to end!

You now live out in Morzine, are you planning on being there this summer or back in the UK or maybe heading away somewhere for more time on snow?
I am going going to be based in Morzine again this summer. Riding my bike, working and keeping fit! I will also be riding Glacier’s with Will Nangle, hopefully documenting our trips.

Sounds sick!! Talking of filming, we have been trying to work with you for a little while now. You did your first trip last year for a jump session in Livigno, how was that?
Ha! That trip was awesome, but wished it ended better for me. We had rad crew and a sick jump but no one knew the speed. I tested the speed a few times and felt okay, so decided to just hit it. Got the speed wrong and over shot it by a long way, luckily I managed to land on the tails of my skis which took most of the impact and came away with just a broken wrist and broken skis! I was super lucky though.

This year you got a chance of redemption and were back out on our first trip of the season to Poland, shooting street rails. Was that trip any better?
Poland was sick! The trip was good, got some nice photos and hopefully some cool shots for the movie. If I go back next year I need to learn to get more spinny and tech, then blend that into new school tricks and keeping everything stylish.

Growing up in the UK and riding rails on dry slope and indoors do you see urban as the place where you can really show your skills or are there other areas you want to explore as well?
I think urban is a totally different part of skiing, you wont always be able to get the right speed for a feature, or there’s a tree or a bin in the landing. Right now, I want to explore urban a lot more, it shows creativity and brings out your unique style! If you get good at riding urban you will be good riding everything in the park.

Well you certainly have a unique style!! Are there any other riders that inspire you or are you just trying to do your own thing?
In the UK scene, the guys that inspire me the most are Andy Collin, and Jamie Lawson. They both have their own style, which is so smooth and they show that keeping everything stylish and smooth will be more impressive than hucking everything and anything!

Haha. Not sure if thats gonna do anything for their ego’s!!
haha

Other than working with us, you have kept fairly low key this season. What else have you been up to?
I have been training to become an instuctor. I have also been trying to prove myself more in the European scene. I have been invited to several competitions, video and photo shoots and there will be hopefully bigger plans for next season.

You have taken a slightly different route into Europe than most of the guys, has it been difficult to get your name out there?
Yeah it has been hard, but the most enjoyable way I think. Luckily I have some good friends in France who I ride with everyday, they all look out for me and when they hear of an event they put my name forward. It has now paid off and I am getting to invited to many more events.

Sweet. You wanna shout out anyone else that has helped you out over the last few years?
I want to say a big thank you to you guys for inviting me to the shoots, Orage, Line, Full Tilt, Marker, Planks, Alpoholics, Bawbags and everyone else I ride with!

Well thanks a lot to talking to us and we look forward to catching up with you when your back in the UK.
YESSIR!

After spending the week at BUSC and feeling worse for wear I came across the event video the other day.

It was a great week and the standard was exceptionally high despite the amount of hangovers around. My highlight of the week was my good friend Nick Harkess winning the Slopestyle event, in qualies he was doing sw left 7′s to sw right 7′s then destroying the rail line. Unfortunately the speed got real bad so he had to tone down his run a tad but he still took top spot.

The biggest shout out of the event had to be for Andrew Pelton who took top spot in the Big Air. He qualified first after doing a cork 7 scremen semen, he was having such a good time he was throwing backies off the inrun jump when most people were struggling to get the speed. He carried this consistency through to the finals and walked home with the gold.

Check out the video of what is most definitely one of the craziest weeks on snow.

Harry Foskett has spent his winter shooting in Poland, Italy, Switzerland and Austria, catching athletes doing what they do best in the streets and mountains of Europe. With his images due to hit news-stands this fall we thought it was time to catch up with him, find out what makes him tick and get to grips with how a young photographer from London got interested in ski photography.

So Harry, how was your winter this year?
Yeah my winters been pretty rad, it’s the first year that I could get away for a long amount of time, last year I only got 2 weeks away, so I was super stoked to get a couple months away. I tried to shoot nearly every day and for sure my work has gotten so much better in such a little amount of time, just can’t wait to get back next year!!!

What was the highlight? What was the lowlight?
Don’t know I enjoyed all of it, a lot of new experiences, places and people. I guess the best thing this year was being able to shoot as much as I could. The lowlights had to be at the beginning of February, I ran out of money so had to go back to the UK for a few weeks that sucked, but I got back out for another month.

What is the hardest part of shooting skiing?
I personally don’t find anything “hard” about shooting; I find things just come to me. However being a skiing photographer is hard, getting into the industry is pretty hard, making the contacts. After that you need a handful of good skiers, you need to be able to anticipate who’s going to be big next year and get shooting with them. I guess the next thing and possibly the biggest thing is being able to get your work out there, getting it into the magazines, getting the sponsor shots. All of this is pretty hard at the start when no one knows who you are. You have got to make sure your works good enough I guess, I’m still new to the game so we’ll see what happens in the future

How did you first get interested in photography?
I always had a camera around when I was younger, I use to be fascinated with how it worked but never really used it for anything but messing around with. It wasn’t till college that I got into photography; I was studying to become an architect, I was taking math and physics two super hard subjects so I picked photography as a third class, something nice and easy, no work needed right? I found myself failing college, bunking off just so I could go and take photos. I soon dropped out, to study photography full time for two years. It was at this time I started to get deeper into skiing, so I put the two together and a few years later here I am doing what I dreamt of.

Why skiing as a photographer wouldn’t it be better to be shooting hot models in a studio?
Ha yeah that would be rad, I actually use to shoot a lot in a studio. I was always attracted to studio stuff, I could get creative with lighting, and it allowed me to practice with different lights, and it’s helped me when lighting up photos now. But this way I get to travel the world with some really rad people, I get to live a cool lifestyle. And I just really love skiing, you don’t become a skiing photographer to ski, I got 4 days skiing this year, but I was still stoked because I got to watch some really cool stuff go down.

Which skiers do you find best to work with and why?
I don’t really know I like to shoot with motivated riders who really want to shoot and do something different. I always like to shoot with my crew, we’re all good friends and have a lot of fun and that’s why we do it.

Describe your best setup for shooting on the slopes?
At the moment I’m rocking a Canon 7d looking to upgrade to a 5d very soon. By far my favorite lens is my 70-200mm is f4L. I use this the most out of everything, I also use a 17-40mm F4L great wide angle lens to have in the bag. I have a fisheye lens but I rarely use it now a days. I have a few flash guns connected with pocket wizards, and an elinchrom quadra for when I need some more power.

What achievement are you most proud of?
My first publication was a big stoke for me, seeing your stuff in print and knowing others are going to see it is a really surreal feeling, I was pretty proud of my first double page spread in Manifesto magazine that was really cool. Obviously this year has been huge for me so we’ll see what next year has in store for my work.

What are your plans for the summer?
Sumer is always the time to get the editing done and send off the submissions to magazines and sponsors; it’s the worst part of being a photographer. Ermm then I’m going to spend some time promoting Black Label Project around the UK, this year I got involved with BLP, we’re looking to hold some events around the UK’s Snow domes, and hopefully sort out a summer range so I’m looking forward to getting that all sorted.

It’s going to be a long summer off the snow, what’s keeping you stoked?
The summer is always hard, but I keep myself occupied with little projects helping out at Black Label, then I might shoot some different stuff just to keep a camera in my hand. I’m lucky to live in the UK, we have loads of indoor snow domes so I can still ski during the summer, it’s not the same but it’s good enough.

Lastly any mentions?
Big thanks to everyone that’s helped me this past year, Unity-Productions, Black Label Project and of course my fam, they’ve supported me loads the past year… and anyone that likes my work!!
